Royal Flying Doctor Service Partnership

Captain Crackers is partnered with the Royal Flying Doctor Service “GROW” Program, (Guiding Rural & Outback Wellbeing), which is a community-focused initiative strengthening rural resilience by addressing mental health and lifestyle in remote areas, using school-based aquaponics and horticulture to teach STEM and healthy eating, while running community days to connect residents with health services and gather input for local needs, building a more connected and healthier outback. When Captain Crackers isn’t visiting day care centres and doing sustainable marine shows, he is assisting the flying doctors with setting up aquaponics systems and yabby hatcheries in schools in the NSW outback, and teaching kids how to grow their own food in an optimal way with reduced water footprint. The program offers:
- Early intervention, with early education and prevention strategies for youth regarding AOD (Alcohol & Other Drugs) and mental health;
- Hands-on learning where Hands-On Learning: Students care for their own food systems, becoming “caretakers” and building pride and belonging; and
- Is needs based, gathering community feedback on health needs to inform future service planning and delivery.
The ultimate goals of the program is to Improve access to essential health and wellbeing services in isolated areas; build stronger, more connected, and resilient rural communities and to provide preventative health education to keep people out of hospital. Captain Crackers is extremely proud of what he has achieved, together with the Royal Flying Doctors Service and the GROW program, and looks forward to rolling it out in due course across the state.
